Fairleigh Dickinson University recently questioned 612 adults in New Jersey about how they get their news, offering as options traditional outlets like newspapers and local and national television news, or blogs, websites and even Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."

•Republican Mark Amodei touts his record of tax cutting, without mentioning that he once sponsored a business services tax that would have been the biggest tax hike in state history.
•Democrat Kate Marshall hammers Amodei for supporting that tax hike, but fails to note that it was offered as a less punitive alternative to another budget-balancing tax plan sponsored by the governor.
•The National Republican Congressional Committee accuses Marshall of “gambling away” $50 million in state money as state treasurer. But not all the money invested through Lehman Brothers is lost, and the overall performance of the portfolio her office manages exceeded state benchmarks.
•The NRCC accuses Marshall of supporting a $500 million tax increase, which is false. She never advocated any such increase, and two Nevada TV stations have now rejected the NRCC ad as unsubstantiated.
•Marshall claims that Amodei would “end Medicare,” but her ad features a cast of seniors whose benefits would not have been affected by the House GOP plan.
•Republican ads make the rehashed but false claim that Marshall supports putting "bureaucrats in charge of your medical decisions."
•The NRCC blames the Democrat for Nevada’s high unemployment and skyrocketing foreclosure rate – but Marshall is the state treasurer, whose duties have no bearing on those problems.

George Lascelles before 1929 and Viscount Lascelles between 1929 and 1947, was the elder son of the 6th Earl of Harewood (1882–1947), and Princess Mary, Princess Royal, the only daughter of King George V of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary. He had a younger brother, The Honourable Gerald Lascelles. Lord Harewood was the eldest nephew of King George VI and was a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. He succeeded to his father's earldom on 23 May 1947. A music enthusiast, Lord Harewood devoted most of his career to opera. He served as editor of Opera magazine from 1950 to 1953 and as director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden from 1951 to 1953 and again from 1969 to 1972. Fred Foy, an announcer best known for his booming, passionate lead-ins to "The Lone Ranger" radio and television series, died Wednesday of natural causes at his Woburn, Mass., home, his daughter said. He was 89. He landed the job as the announcer and narrator on "The Lone Ranger" radio show in 1948. The show's live lead-in introduced its masked cowboy hero and his trusted horse with the line: "A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi-Yo Silver!' ... The Lone Ranger!" Foy was born in Detroit in 1921, graduated from that city's Eastern High School in 1938 and landed a job on the announcing staff of radio station WXYZ in Detroit in 1942. He was drafted into the Army that year and served in an Armed Forces Radio unit in Cairo during World War II. Foy returned to WXYZ in 1945, then three years later won the job on "The Lone Ranger," even stepping into the lead role for one radio broadcast when actor Brace Beemer had laryngitis. The introduction's signature opening line, "Hi-Yo, Silver!" was done by an actor on the radio show, though his father belted it out for the TV series. Foy also performed on radio series including "The Green Hornet" and "Sgt. Preston of the Yukon." In 1960, Foy began working for the ABC network. He spent five years as an announcer on the "The Dick Cavett Show" and narrated documentaries. He left ABC in the mid-1980s and later retired to Woburn.

"Sleigh Ride" is a popular light orchestral piece composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer had the original idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946; he finished the work in February 1948. Lyrics, about a person who would like to ride in a sleigh on a winter's day with another person, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950. The orchestral version was first recorded in 1949 by Arthur Fiedler and The Boston Pops Orchestra. The song was a hit. According to author Steve Metcalf in the book Leroy Anderson: A Bio-Bibliography [Praeger 2004], "'Sleigh Ride' ... has been performed and recorded by a wider array of musical artists than any other piece in the history of Western music."

EL PASO, Texas, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- At least 35 Americans have been killed in the border town of Juarez, Mexico, so far this year, records kept by the U.S. State Department indicate.

Officials told the El Paso (Texas) Times the total number of 2010 victims is expected to exceed the 39 Americans killed in 2008 and 2009 combined.

October was one of the deadliest months for Americans since Mexican drug cartels began battling for territory, said an official at the U.S. consulate in Juarez.

The latest victims are two Americans who were shot to death Saturday while traveling in a black sport utility vehicle near the Zaragoza international bridge.

Earlier this year a U.S. consulate worker and her husband were killed by gunmen near the Juarez city hall.

A U.S. high school teacher was shot in the back across the border from the University of Texas at El Paso in August while a 19-year-old student from UT-El Paso was killed by gunmen on May 23.

Officials in the Mexican state of Chihuahua told the Times more than 6,800 people have been killed in Juarez since 2008.

Charlie O'Donnell, the announcer whose voice has opened "Wheel of Fortune" for decades, has died. He was 78. O'Donnell (born August 12, 1932; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American television announcer best known for his work on Wheel of Fortune — the voice of the game show even before hosts Pat Sajak and Vanna White appeared. He died late Sunday 31 NOV 2010 at his Los Angeles home. O'Donnell was a popular radio DJ in New York before starting his television career in Philadelphia with Dick Clark on "American Bandstand." He also served as announcer for Oscar and Emmy telecasts and other game shows including "The Newlywed Game." His signature phrase "Wheeeeeeel of Fortune," could be heard on the show from its beginning with host Chuck Woolery in 1975. He worked on the show until 1980, and again from 1988 until his death.

U.S. slips to historic low in global corruption index

The United States has dropped out of the "top 20" in a global league table of least corrupt nations, tarnished by financial scandals and the influence of money in politics, Transparency International said on Tuesday.

Somalia was judged the most corrupt country, followed by Myanmar and Afghanistan at joint second-worst and then by Iraq, in the Berlin-based watchdog TI's annual corruption perceptions index (CPI).

The United States fell to 22nd from 19th last year, with its CPI score dropping to 7.1 from 7.5 in the 178-nation index, which is based on independent surveys on corruption.

Playwright Joseph Stein, who turned a Yiddish short story into the classic Broadway musical "Fiddler on the Roof" and later wrote the screenplay for its successful movie adaptation, has died at age 98. Stein, who won a Tony Award for his work on "Fiddler," also supplied the book, or story, for nearly a dozen other musicals, including "Zorba," "Mr. Wonderful" and "Plain and Fancy." He also wrote for radio and for television during its early golden age, working for such performers as Henry Morgan, Sid Caesar and Phil Silvers. But it was "Fiddler," based on Sholom Aleichem's "Tevye and His Daughters," that proved to be his biggest hit. Featuring a score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick and direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins, the show opened on Broadway in September 1964 and ran for more than 3,200 performances.

Although NBC announcer Don Pardo officially retired from NBC in 2004 and moved to Tucson, Arizona, the producers of Saturday Night Live persuaded him to continue providing the introductions for their show. In 2006, he decided to begin prerecording his announcements from a home studio in Arizona. That lasted only a few episodes before producers insisted they needed him in Studio 8H, and he resumed weekly flights to New York to do the show. On Saturday, February 23, 2008, Pardo appeared at the closing of SNL to blow out the candles of his 90th birthday cake. Upon his induction into the Rhode Island Radio Hall of Fame on May 14, 2009, Pardo indicated that the May 16, 2009, episode of Saturday Night Live could be his last. However, his voice was heard once again announcing the show's 35th season premiere, and he continued providing the voice-overs through the season. He announced that for the 36th season, he would pre-record his parts from his home in Arizona rather than performing live in New York City.

There are other beautiful music format stations but none have the special touch yours has. I think when you use the word "quiet" it says it all. Easy listening has become a label that is applied indescriminatly to various types of music including "soft rock". When I found your station, and heard how tasteful and "pure" your brand of easy listening is, I immediately knew I had found a station programmed by someone who knew what they were doing. When I go to sleep, I have your station on, and when I wake up, it's there as I hit the snooze button, and there's nary a shift in the continuity. To me, listening to a format such as this, and having a cut that is harsh or not melodic, totally ruins the mood for me. Many of the artists you play have produced cuts that were of that category, and the difference between your station, and others, is that you recognize the difference and eliminate them from airplay. Thanks for bringing it back. For the time being, I can only listen on my home PC. Maybe someday technology will permit me to listen in my car and at work. (I can't listen at work now--the tech geeks are afraid I will use up their precious bandwidth.) Thanks for the memories. I'll be listening.
